Behaviour Policy

Golden Rules

Do Don't
Be gentle Hurt anybody
Be kind and helpful Hurt people's feelings
Work hard Waste your or other people's time
Look after property Waste or damage things
Listen to people Interrupt
Be honest Cover up the truth

Guidelines

Where children are choosing to ignore the responsibility to behave appropriately, the following steps are provided as an opportunity for the child to reassess their behaviour:

  • A warning
  • Taken out of class
  • Speaking privately to the child’s parent(s)
  • Formal written warning sent to parents
  • Payment for deliberate damage to property
  • A final warning letter sent to parents

If a child refuses to leave the classroom when asked to by the imam, then to avoid further confrontation the imam should either:

  • Ignore the child if they are not disturbing the class, but make them aware they must complete their class work or will have to come in another day to do so
  • Call the child’s parents to collect the child if they continue to disrupt the class. If other children are in danger from this child then they should be moved away from the situation.

In the final analysis, where all other approaches have failed and where the safety and/or learning of the other pupils is at risk, exclusion procedures may be entered into including penalty fines for the parents.

Bullying

Bullying is anything, which is intended to upset or hurt anyone else, to make a person feel isolated, unhappy or afraid. It is the persistent nature, which turns such behaviour into bullying rather than an isolated incident.

Bullying or intimidation, by thought, word or deed, is totally unacceptable

Methods to deal with bullying: • Promoting values that reject bullying behaviour and promote co-operative behaviour. • Ensuring effective and visible supervision. • Taking the time to listen to what children say and to investigate all accusations. • Follow up incidents with all those involved. • Provide written reports to all those who need to know including parents. • Giving individual support to the target and the individual or group displaying bullying behaviour to enable them to consider the consequences of their actions and help them to form relationships based on mutual respect and trust, rather than on intimidation and fear.

Classroom Behaviour

Clear, structured rules within a classroom are vital. These should reflect the Golden Rules. The rules need to be shared by the children and adults working in the class and reinforced in a positive way as part of the daily routine in the classroom. At the beginning of the year class charters should be discussed and agreed and signed as a whole class. These should be on display in the classroom. This may be referred to when a rule is broken or when a child is reflecting on their behaviour.

Prayer time Behaviour

All students are expected to join the prayer when the Adhaan is called during class time. Children are expected to be respectful and calm while in the prayer room and during the prayer itself. If any child is caught being disruptive then an Imam then must speak to the child and warn them against future behaviour. Parents will be informed for any continued misbehaviour during prayer time. If prayer time is close to the end of the class, children must still join the prayer and all parents must wait until the prayer is finished before collecting their child.

Monitoring

We will use a log to record challenging, bullying or racist behaviour. For each entry, parents will be notified and this will be a permanent record on their file.

Discipline Stages

  1. Discipline within the Madrassah is very important, and something we take very seriously. Well-behaved and disciplined pupils are crucial for the smooth running of the Madrasa.
  2. Our disciplinary procedure AFTER exhausting all efforts to motivate/encourage a pupil is as follows:
    1. Verbal warning to pupil (depending on offence committed).
    2. Letter to parent if the issue is still not resolved after the verbal warning. Lines and/or detention may also be given. The maximum detention time is 1 hour.
    3. Further to this, parents WILL be called in for a meeting with the Principal and/or management. At this stage we expect the issue to be fully resolved, and the problem should no longer exist.
    4. If the concern is still not resolved, then the pupil may be suspended.
    5. On certain occasions a pupil may be expelled if it is in the best interest of the Madrassah.
  3. Note: We may not always follow the above procedure, such as in the case of persistent and/or aggressive behaviour/bullying (to pupils or staff). In such circumstances, we will suspend the pupil immediately. The Shura will then decide what steps to take.
